RANGE OF LIGHT TERRITORY: WHERE ANXIETY GOES TO DIE

Stretching along the entire southern Sierra and extending east to include Death Valley, Range of Light Territory is the largest block of public recreational lands in the Lower 48. It’s an easy day’s drive from both L.A. and the Bay Area. Though it includes hundreds of campsites, most of the Territory is open to dispersed camping, with no fees and no reservations.

No need to worry about beating the crowds. Outside of a few pockets, there are no crowds in Range of Light Territory. For example, try taking a 70-mile slow roll through the Owens Valley (above).

The Territory takes in two-dozen wilderness areas and national parks, plus areas of Forest Service and other public lands that are the size of small states.

The Range of Light Trailblazer guide divides the Territory into 31 contiguous regions, and details all the trailheads, campgrounds, and dispersed camping areas. The book also includes a dispersed camping handbook, for those who are new to the experience. Each region has its own map.

Mother Nature is not always nice, but as long as you are prepared you have nothing to worry about. Exploring is not about roughing it, but rather living the good life.
